If you have ever been worried that you are ‘getting too old to be a singer’ or wondering whether you have ‘left it too late’ then you will be pleased to know that ageing can be one of the best things that can happen to you as a vocalist.
I could be wrong, but I’ll take a punt and say that ageing is something that seems to be on the minds of women more than men, especially in an industry like the music one. I personally have struggled with thoughts of feeling that I needed to have achieved so much more by a certain date and that my time to shine was limited to my twenties and thirties. I also know from speaking to many of my students who are in their fifties that they took a long time to decide whether to even start singing lessons for fear of having left it all too late.
So in a world where we all want to look younger, feel younger, and get bitten by Vampires so we can stay young forever (or maybe that’s just me…) what is it about ageing that is so GOOD for singing?
Watch the video below and find out.

I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this one. Have you ever worried about whether you’re getting too old to be a singer? Or have you delayed pursuing your dreams of learning how to sing because you felt like you had left it too late.
Please leave your comments below.
Lots of love,

Thank you for your post!Im 41 and was thinking I was to old to peruse a singing career.I actually started googling famous singers ages to lift my spirits.
Hi Jennifer, you absolutely can pursue a career in singing at 41. Your voice is still at its peak and many singers are finding audiences through the internet, no matter what age they are. x
Check this out . I am 66 and have recorded several albums-i am a very good vocalist yet i struggle with doubt of being able to make a living singing. I was even a contestant on the Voice season 13 in 2017. Its the technical changes and having a band conducive to my style that is my obstacle. I’m still fighting
Hi Nicola,
I am sure this video would be very encouring for many people……..though I am 26 now….I still used to feel a bit older and insecure at times after knowing about the many artists who had begun their careers in their early 20’s and were doing fine by their late 20’s……though it’s not even the case that I have just started singing but since I took the decision to quit my job and take music professionally, these insecurities have bothered me at times……..but now after watching this……..I would like to say that I am JUST 26 and I feel great……this video has been great encouragement for me too, especially when I know it has the opinions of a person who herself is a professional singer songwriter and humble at the same time……..you know not like those who may be successful but who like to impose their opinions and brag about what they know……I really hope you read this letter as I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart……..and would love to always stay in touch……may be some day in the future we’ll be performing somewhere together…….haha….and I am sure I’ll be learning a lot from that collaboration………Thank you again for all the hard work……..stay blessed…….I wish the best for you:)
Hi Nicola thanks for the video, I am about to turn 60 and really would just like to be able to sing in the church choir!!!! I guess I have always been too self conscience to sing in public but I have been looking and trying your training video’s and they are very good. I will continue to practice and hopefully I will become confidant enough to try out for the choir. You are an amazing teacher
I’m 66 and feel my voice is as good as it ever has been. Although I look after it a lot more now. Lots of water, good warmup and more practice
Awesome I’m 65 and have started in terms of wanting to do it publicly , it’s amazing how things happen when they are suppose to …
Yep! The universe just seems to know. 🙂
Can you touch on the problems of menopausal women and how it affects a woman’s voice
I’m not a doctor so I can’t offer advice… all I know is that magnesium and evening primrose oil helps me!! 🙂
Fantastic.. most lucid ,correct informative piece on very rare but important aspect of singing passion to aspiring budding artists but the important rule to follow is “daily practice and vocal exercises “..you sing uptil doom’s day..!!
